about

We were briefly staying in a Zen monastery in California when I had a day off from work getting ready for tourist season and I wrote this one. I was thinking about a children's book again, and admiring three different Martins. I felt locked up deep in foreign-feeling mountains and far from the sea, but remember eating really well and sitting in hot springs at the end of each day thinking "Gee, these monks have it pretty damn good, maybe I could do this."

lyrics

Abbey walls all wet with rain
At least we're on the inside
At least we're on the inside

And if the moon don't rise tonight
At least we have each other
At least we have each other

Father, just how far are we
From the edges of the ocean
The edges of the ocean

Because I know there's a psalm in me
When I'm looking at the sea

Bells ring out in the dead of night
Martin's ghost out walking
Asking who's awake still?

Can I encourage my dreams
To come before the dawn does?
I will make them welcome

Little do I know of peace
But the bit I do I cling to
Like the moss clings to the mountains

And the only thing I know for sure
Is I'm still looking for the cure
I've read the words, I've learned the songs
And we won't be here for very long
