about

On the very last night of an apple-picking season in Vermont I stayed up later than anyone else in the bunkhouse. I was trying to be as quiet as possible and barely strumming a D chord when I saw a vision of a child and its mother settling down for bed on the night before a holiday. I started whispering some words and by the end of the song it was clear it was Christmas. I was kind of picturing the children's book "Star Mother's Youngest Child" illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman.

lyrics

Take this tea into your body
(Drink it while it's warm)
Take your bed right by the window
(The bed where you were born)
Look out now over the pastures
(The whole world's fast asleep)
As you drift into the ethers
(And so soon shall you be)
When you wake it will be Christmas
And there will be new snow
